Selection (Trial / Audition Requirements)


The selection period is from 1 July – 26 July 2019.

 

Shortlisted applicants will be informed via telephone or email to attend a trial/audition for sports or performing arts. An informal interview will be conducted with shortlisted applicants after the trial/audition.

 

Shortlisted applicants typically have:

·         participated actively in CCA (related to talent area)

·         represented the school in competitions/performances

·         held leadership positions in school

Applicants with non-school based activities and achievements will also be considered. 

 

The requirements for the talent areas are as follow:

DSA Talent Area

Track and Field

Cross Country

(boys and girls)

·         Running drills (warm up)

·         60m run

·         600m run

 

Basketball

(boys and girls) 

·         Vertical Jump test

·         Runs (with and without ball)

·         Free throw shooting

·         3v3 game

 

Netball

(girls)

·         Physical proficiency test (jump, agility and speed)

·         Basic netball skills

·         Game play 

 

Football

(boys)

·         Running and dribbling drill

·         Passing and receiving drill

·         Shooting drill

·         Small sided game

 

Choir

(girls)

Shortlisted applicants will:

·         perform 2 songs of their choice, which will demonstrate their musical ability, pitch, rhythm, feeling and expression

 

Chinese Dance

(girls)

Shortlisted applicants will:

·         prepare and perform a 1 minute dance that demonstrate rhythm, expression, timing and control

·         perform basic movements that showcase flexibility and agility

·         learn a 4 x 8 beat dance from instructor. Shortlisted applicants will be given time to practice and replicate the dance  

International Dance

(boys and girls)

Shortlisted applicants will:

·         perform a 1 minute dance item* which will demonstrate rhythm, timing, expression and passion

·         learn a short routine (about 30 seconds) from instructor. Shortlisted applicants will be given 30 minutes to practice and replicate the choreography, followed by 10 seconds of freestyling to the music

 

*hip hop, jazz, contemporary or modern

 

String Ensemble

(boys and girls)

Shortlisted applicants will:

·         play 2 contrasting (preferably) short pieces appropriate to their stage of development

 

Concert Band

(boys and girls)

For Woodwinds (Flute, Oboe, Saxophone, Clarinet, Bassoon, Piccolo), shortlisted applicants are to perform TWO contrasting pieces or movements appropriate to their stage of development.

They are to play at least ONE major scale on their instrument.

 

For Brass (Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium), shortlisted applicants are to perform TWO contrasting pieces or movements appropriate to their stage of development. They are to play at least ONE major scale on their instrument.

 

Shortlisted applicants are to bring their own instrument and choice pieces of music for the audition.

 

For Percussion (Xylophone, Timpani, Snare Drum, Drum Set, Glockenspiel, Cymbals, Bass Drum, Chimes), shortlisted applicants are to demonstrate various percussion techniques and rhythms in minimum 4 minutes of performing time.

 

Percussion instruments are provided at the audition. Shortlisted applicants are to bring along their choice pieces of music.

 


Please note that students who are unable to attend the trial/audition for valid reasons can make alternative arrangements subject to the availability of school staff. The request for alternative arrangements can be made via phone or email to the school.
